How Peristaltic Pumps Work

Peristaltic pumps (also known as roller pumps) are typically used for moving fluids from one place to another through plastic tubing. What differentiates a peristaltic pump from other kinds of pumps is that the pump’s internal parts do not touch the fluid being transported through the tubing. This makes it the prefect transport method for medical, food service, and many other applications where contamination is a concern. Peristaltic pumps contain rotors or rollers that are attached to a central hub. On the outside, plastic tubing surrounds the rollers and is held against the rollers by a u-shaped channel. As the motor spins, the rollers squeeze the fluid through the tubing somewhat like the action used to squeeze toothpaste from the bottom of the tube.
